PLACES TO SEE IN TANAKPUR, UTTARAKHAND
The charming town of Tanakpur, Uttarakhand, is located at the foothills of the Himalayas and along the banks of the Sharda River. It is surrounded by dense forest and is surrounded with dense forests. Tanakpur, which is rugged and unspoiled with stunning views, is often called the “Gateway to the Kumaon Himalayas.” As a bridge over the Sharda River, the town borders Nepal and India. Tanakpur is a popular destination for pilgrims and devotees. The Devi Purnagiri Temple, which is one among the 108 Shakti Peethas, is 20 km away from the town. You can find many tourist spots near Tanakpur, including forests, temples, lakes, and other places. Here are some of these places.
Maa Purnagiri Temple
Here is the divine mythological tale of Mahadev Shiva, Ma Parvati, and Sati as deities Shiva (and Sati) are retold. According to legend, Lord Shiva, a Yogi, had married Sati against her father’s wishes. He also performed a Vrihaspati Yogna without inviting them. Sati was embarrassed by her father’s insults to Lord Shiva, and she committed suicide in front of the sacrificial flame. In grief, Lord Shiva carried Sati’s body into his arms and danced the dance of destruction. Parts of her body were believed to have fallen at different locations, and these became known as Shakti Peethams. Purnagiri is believed to have fallen from her navel, or “nabi,” and the temple was built there later. It is one of the oldest temples and is often visited by devotees during Chaitra Navaratri, which takes place in March-April.
Tanakpur is also famous for its Panchmukhi Shiva temple, which has a simple and humble Dharamshala.
The Boom Temple, also known as Adhya Shakti Peeth, is another popular temple located along the banks of the Sharda River. It is believed that it was built under the guidance of the spiritual and mysterious Guru Maa. The shrines are dedicated to the Hindu pantheon Goddesses, who are either Shakti or Ma Parvati.
Sharda Ghat
The Sharda Ghat, also known as Ma Purnagiri Ghat, is one of the most beautiful ghats. The picture-perfect view of the turquoise waters of river Sharda, surrounded by mountains, is like a postcard. This is one of the holiest ghats, as many pilgrims and devotees use it for their ablutions before they visit the temple.
The river also flows into Nepal, and you will eventually reach the Nepal border as you drive through small villages along the banks of the river. The border is connected by a bridge. There are rules and protocols in place if you want to visit the other country for a day. The bridge also had a medieval market that was established by the Katyuri Kings. However, it was destroyed in the landslide. It was thought to have been a major trade route in colonial times.
Shyamlatal & Vivekananda Ashram
It is located about 30 kilometers from Tanakpur and lies en route to Champawat, a tranquil natural lake. Because of the hills surrounding it; the lake has a dark blueish-black color. It is called Shyaam by locals to honor the hues of Lord Krishna. It is quiet and peaceful in this lost village, so you feel as if you’re in an idyllic paradise.
Further uphill, the Vivekananda Ashram offers a little respite in this world full of loveliness. It was founded over 100 years ago by Swami Virajanandaji Maharaj, one of the disciples of Swami Vivekananda. The Ashram is also available for meditation and spiritual growth. The Ashram has a temple. In addition to providing medical assistance, the Ashram helps with training, education, and welfare activities for children. This is Tanakpur’s best place to go if you need to be quiet for a while. However, the Ashram is closed to guests during winter.
Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary
This sanctuary for wildlife is located in Uttarakhand. It is situated between the Rivers Sharda and Gola and is dominated by sal trees. It covers an area of 270 km and is found between Champavat and Haldwani forest divisions in Uttarakhand. This sanctuary has three gates. The Chorgalia Gate can be found in Haldwani, while the Kilpura Gate can be found in Chakarpur. The Kakrali Gate can be found in Tanakpur.
It is part of the Shivalik Elephant Reserve and one of the most popular places in Tanakpur. On our wildlife safari, we were able to spot wild elephants and their calves enjoying a mud bath. There are also tigers, leopards, and other mammals in the forest. The forest is home to over 200 bird species. It is located between Nepal’s Shuklaphanta National Park in Uttarakhand and the dense forests at Ramnagar, Uttarakhand. The landscape in some areas is very similar to Corbett National Park. This part of the national park does not have a formal safari program. Although you can do some offroading, it is not possible to go on safari in this part of the national park. For adventure-seeking, Tanakpur has a number of activities that include wildlife tourism, adventure tourism, and rafting on the river.
Tanakpur is beautiful and offers many unexplored places. However, the area is still very rural and needs to be developed. Although there are many tourist spots near Tanakpur, they need to be developed. It is currently a pilgrim spot and has not been developed for tourism. The tourism department is eager to develop adventure and rural tourism in the area. A few homestays are available in the area, as well as a few hotels with two stars. There is potential for wildlife, water sports, and other adventure activities to be developed. However, safety and other precautions need to be addressed. It is lacking in naturalists, forest guards, or guides. There is something special about visiting remote, undiscovered places. If you’re on a pilgrimage, or if the idea of visiting a remote destination appeals to you, you can plan a trip to Tanakpur. It is possible to drive from Delhi, which takes approximately seven to eight hours, and it’s at a distance of 355 km. Fly to Bareilly, Mumbai, and then drive to Tanakpur. It’s a short drive of 115km and takes about two hours to reach by road.
