A GAME OF THRONES TOUR OF NORTHERN IRELAND
Game of Thrones has taken over from Lord of the Rings. In the past, tourists would tour New Zealand to find LOR filming sites. But today, it’s all Westeros.
Game of Thrones, filmed on location in Croatia or Iceland, is the most ambitious TV project in recent years. It’s the show that gets more attention around the globe than any other drama.
Game Of Thrones Tour Of Northern Ireland
Dave and I are late bloomers, but we became hooked after watching the first few episodes.
Northern Ireland is where a lot of Game of Thrones was filmed. Once we reached our first stop in our journey around the country, our search for filming locations began. Martin’s epic series. What we found.
Castle Ward, Aka Winterfell
Castle Ward, located in Downpatrick County Down is a great day trip for GOT fans and non-watchers. This Castle is only a 40-minute drive from Belfast and attracts many tour buses which stop to see the Winterfell set. To truly enjoy the Castle, a longer stay is required. A self-drive is a great option.

Castle Winterfell
We began our day by meeting William John Snow in Castle Winterfell for an archery class. The production department provided our Game of Thrones costumes, and we started our lesson in the scene where John Snow taught Bran Stark how to shoot archery.
Bran was not a good shot, and his brothers made fun of him, so Dave and I felt better that we were also not the best shooters. Dave did a better picture than I did, and I was forced to serve Dave for the remainder of the day because of my lack of skill.
Castle Ward is where many of the Winterfell scenes were filmed in the first episodes. As you stroll around the grounds, you can imagine scenes from the show.
Bran’s fall out of the Castle due to Jaime. Theon’s frequent visits to the brothel or King Robert Baratheon arriving with his entourage in Winterfell.
Baelor Battlefield
The producers returned to the location several times to take advantage of its scenic beauty. Tywin Lannister’s Camp and Baelor’s Battlefield were filmed on the fields.
Canoe with Jaime and Brienne
In season one, we hated Jaime. Jaime was so evil and slimy. Jaime became one of our favorite characters as the seasons continued, especially when Brienne was involved.
Remember when Brienne took her canoe downstream? Here they were, on the shore of the river. They got into all sorts of trouble.
Hanging Tree

You will see a large branch hanging over the path as you walk. Jaime and Brienne found the bodies of three women hanging in the tree.
Brienne killed them and buried them properly. She didn’t waste time because the men who killed the women returned, and she had to fight with them. We all know Brienne loves to fight.
The Twins
Computer-generated images (CGI) were used to place the Twin Towers on either side of the harbor at Castle Ward. The Twins belong to Lord Walder Frey; crossing the water requires his approval.
We all know what happened when Robb Stark agreed to marry Frey’s daughter in exchange for allowing him and his army to pass. Remember the Red Wedding?
You can rent bikes, take a tour on a jetboat, or explore the area yourself.
For your photo shoots, you can rent costumes and swords to immerse yourself in Game of Thrones.
The Glens of Antrim
Ned Stark decapitated a Night’s Watch deserter before Rob, John Snow, and Bran. The Starks are a family that values honor above all else. It is this honor that ultimately leads to their demise.
Murlough Bay
You can take a short detour to Murlough Bay and see the Scottish Isles and the beautiful coast.
Follow the signs to the coastal highway. However, this beautiful corner of the country deserves your attention.
The rolling countryside was so beautiful that Theon, his sister, and their horses could ride their horses toward their father’s Castle.
Ballintoy Harbour, Aka Pyke Harbour
Theon Greyjoy is a poor man. He could have stayed loyal, but he ran home to a father who hated him and a sister who resented him. Theon meets his sister here when he first arrives home to the Iron Islands.
Dark Hedges, aka King’s Road
The Dark Hedges is not only one of Northern Ireland’s most photographed locations, but they are also a memorable Game of Thrones scene.
