The Best Things to Do in La Paz, Mexico
Only a few places are worth living in, and La Paz, Mexico, is one of those. We didn’t want the trip to end when we had to return home. But don’t worry; we will be back. Let’s look at all the reasons we love La Paz, Mexico.
Sea Kayaking on Cortez’s Sea of Cortez
Sea Kayaking in Cortez, Mexico, is one of the most popular things in La Paz. Day trips and multi-day tours are possible. It was an incredible 10-day trip with Baja Outside Activities to San Jose Island.
The turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez were tranquil and clear. Our expedition was so peaceful that we barely saw anyone else. It was a fantastic experience. Although it was hard work, we had lots of fun.
You could also encounter a lot of marine life. Our group of 11 saw pods of dolphins swimming by daily. We also saw a whale. Margaritas flowed along the beach every evening, and people enjoyed their time snorkeling or hiking along the beautiful coastline.
Kayaking Balandra Beach
Balandra Beach is an excellent place to rent a kayak in La Paz if a 10-day kayaking tour is outside your agenda. Day tours can be booked from La Paz for a guided kayaking tour, or you can rent kayaks and explore the clear waters on your own.
You don’t need to travel far to enjoy this beautiful cove.
Sea Lions at Los Islotes on Isla Espiritu Sante Island
If you are a lover of marine life encounters, Swimming alongside sea lions can be one of the most rewarding things in your life. You can do it in La Paz, Mexico.
We were fortunate enough to have the chance to swim with sea lions several times and will never miss the opportunity to do so again. The sea lions are a must-see in La Paz. You can take a boat trip on an inflatable dinghy to Espiritu Santo Island to see the sea lions.
Espiritu Santo Island is home to one of the most unspoiled ecosystems in Baja California Sur’s Sea of Cortez. Learn more about Isla Espiritu Santo Island A Unforgettable Adventure in Mexico’s Isla Espiritu Santo.

Whale watching in La Paz (Mexico)
Whale watching is by far the most fantastic experience. La Paz is home to many whales that migrate through the region. Every year, whales migrate through Baja, California. La Paz is unique because the whales stop by shallow lagoons to nurse their calves.
The whale watching season runs from January to April, when whales migrate through the region. The chances of seeing them are high; they often swim alongside boats. This is one of the most popular things to do in La Paz.

Enjoy swimming with whale sharks in La Paz.
Without swimming with whale sharks, no trip to La Paz is complete. Whale sharks visit La Paz annually to feed from October 1 through April 30. This is the best place to see a wild whale shark in the world.
It was one of our most memorable experiences. We were able to swim with the whale sharks in Cancun. La Paz isn’t as crowded as Cancun, so swimming with these gentle giants would be a better spot. It is fantastic to see a whale shark up close. These gentle giants glide effortlessly through the water. Although keeping up with them is challenging, it is an unforgettable experience. Book your La Paz whale shark tour with Get Your Guide. 24-hour cancellation and last-minute bookings are free.
Go to the Beach
You’ll find the best beaches of Baja California Sur just 15 minutes from La Paz. Many beaches can be found north of La Paz. So it’s unsurprising that so many condos have been built in this area. Baja City doesn’t have a beach, but you can find beautiful stretches of sand just outside the city center.
Many beaches are easily accessible from La Paz.
- Balandra Beach
- Playa el Tesoro
- Pichilingue Beach
- Ensenada Grande
The beaches of La Paz can be reached by bus, motorbike, or rental car.
Go Off-Roading
Here, off-roading is enormous. The Baja 1000 ends in La Paz every year. For off-road fun, the desert terrain nearby is ideal. There are hundreds of miles of fun to be explored, with very little settlement along the tracks.
We were able to experience the off-roading on our way to San Jose Island’s launching point for our kayaking trip.
Sandboarding on the Sand Dunes
Try sandboarding at El Mogote if the desert is your cup of tea. It’s great fun to ride down giant dunes with a sandboard. It’s a different experience than snowboarding, but it’s worth a try if you are an adrenaline junkie.
You can use the board as a sled if you need help learning the ropes. Baja Desconocida offers sandboarding tours.
Go sailing
Sailing is a popular activity in La Paz. You can book a sunset boat tour to see the coast and look for wildlife.
Nothing is better than sailing along the ocean. The stunning coastline of Baja, California, will blow your mind. You can always remember the spectacular sunsets.
Stroll along the Malecon
The Malecon is a gorgeous waterfront promenade that runs 5.5km (3.5 miles) from Hotel Marina, the hotel we stayed at in La Paz. Nothing is more romantic than walking around La Paz with your honey and admiring the street art.
The best time to visit La Paz is in the evenings when the whole town comes out to enjoy the cool nights. People cycle, run and walk along the waterfront. They stop at restaurants to have dinner or drink. Live bands perform late into the evening. It’s magical.
SUP – Paddleboarding
If you’ve been following me for a while, you will know that Dave and myself love paddleboarding. The Calm Waters of Cortez is a great place to try it.
You can rent paddleboards in La Paz and paddle along the shore. You can also book trips and excursions on paddleboards with Baja Outdoor Activity at La Paz.
We would take a paddleboard everywhere if we had it. Living in La Paz, we might use our paddleboards to get around. We would get on our boards to paddle into town if we needed to leave our condo at the waterfront.
Shopping in La Paz
La Paz is home to many jewelry artists. There is also a co-op for local artists.
Handmade necklaces are one of my favorite parts about visiting Mexico. This trip was no exception. We purchased chains from street vendors, and they changed them for us.
