8 EASY SWAPS TO ECO-FRIENDLY TRAVEL
You might be like me and find organizing for your next adventure half the fun. You may constantly be looking for environmentally-friendly ways to travel abroad. However, you might not know where to look. We have busy lives and don’t always have the time to plan our trips. This means that we can be rushing to grab those travel toiletries at the airport. This is the ideal time to make sustainable travel arrangements for your next adventure.
We must reduce plastic waste for the environment. Plastic production requires enormous amounts of energy and resources, contributing to global warming. Unfortunately, recycling plastic is not efficient enough. Around 60% of the items end up in landfills or the ocean.
Many great products can help you travel sustainably. Here’s my list of top eco-friendly travel products. These products are good for the planet, help reduce plastic use and save space when packing for your next trip.
SHAMPOO, CONDITIONER AND BODY BARS
These products are a great way to get rid of some excess plastic. Because my hair is thick and long, I use conditioner like a champ. I am constantly on the road and will use regular plastic bottles of conditioner every week. Shampoo, conditioner and body bars can last for up to 80 washes. You’ll save a lot of money and have more space in your toiletry bag. Also, you won’t be able to relate to the Friends episode where Ross had a shampoo explosion all over his clothes.
ECO-FRIENDLY SUNSCREEN & ZINC
Protect your skin if you plan to spend a lot of time in tropical paradises on your next vacation. Sunscreens purchased abroad can cost you a lot and can cause damage to coral reefs. You should check the ingredients for oxybenzone and octinoxate, as these chemicals can lead to coral bleaching. For your face, check out zinc. Zinc is thick and can last for a long time, even if you are in the water snorkelling or surfing. You can find the ingredients in nature, and it is usually found in a metal container, which saves space and adds more plastic.
BAMBOO TOOTHBRUSH
The average plastic toothbrush can take 400 years to decay. This is even though you should change your toothbrush every 3 months. That’s a lot of plastic for one lifetime. Switch to a sustainable brush instead of using plastic toothbrushes. Bamboo brushes can be a great way of reducing your carbon footprint. Once you have removed the bristles, you can compost the handle. It will decompose in 3 years.
RAZORS
This is my favourite eco-friendly travel tip. It’s simple! Disposable razors are only good for a few weeks, and they are entirely made of plastic. If you keep them in a safe place, you can save money over the long term. You need to replace the blades as cheap as chips and easy to find in most countries.
REUSABLE EAR BOUD
You may have seen the video of the seahorse holding onto an earbud. It’s not surprising when you think about the matter. But did you know that you can buy a reusable earbud? One of these earbuds can last up to 1000 times if it is cleaned between uses. This means that 999 fewer plastic cotton buds are in landfills or oceans.
SAY NO TO PLASTIC
You’ll be handed plastic straws, cutlery, and bags while on the road. You can easily swap to more sustainable options that you can carry around in your handbag or handbag, so you are always prepared for anything. Bamboo or metal straws, cutlery sets and reusable bags can be purchased. Keep them folded up for easy access when you need them. These bags won’t take up much room in your bag, but they will let you say no to plastic far more often than you think.
REUSABLE CONTAINERS
Water is something we all need to drink daily. Most people also like to have a cup of coffee on the go. You can swap plastic bottles and disposable cups for more sustainable alternatives. There are many water bottles on the market today. Many can keep your drink hot or cold for hours, making them ideal for travellers. A keep cup is great for coffee lovers who tend to buy a lot. They can be used to heat hot beverages on the go, and they will prevent so many disposable cups from going to waste.
Pick up WHEREVER AND WHENEVER YOU CAN
We could all do a lot if we did just a little. One of my favourite sayings. Make it a habit of picking up trash and plastic as you walk along the beaches. There are many places where you can participate in organized coastal cleanups. This is a great way to get out and enjoy beautiful destinations while leaving the area cleaner than you found it.
One Life is committed to sustainable travel. Water refill stations will be available at most overnight stops. Our wonderful suppliers work hard to offer sustainable alternatives like plastic straws. You can also pick up our eco-friendly merch like our reusable bottles.
